What Happens To The Animals When The Pet Store Goes Out Of Business?
Do they dispose of them or just sell them really cheap to other pet stores? Or do they just keep them or refund them to where they go it in the first place. What happens?

“I often see people who purchase a pet store puppy because they want to rescue it. By doing so, they support a system that allows dogs to live in misery. I realize their hearts are in the right places and they want to save the dog. I also realize that they do not know what happens to the unsold pet shop dogs, so I wanted to tell you about 3 pet store puppies and what happened to them.
They are a pug and 2 westies, all 9 weeks old. The miller breeds for the pet trade and sent them off to the pet store to be sold. When they got there, the store owner dicovered all three has physical defects. The pug had a bum knee and the westies had hernias.
The pet store owner, not wanting to lose money, called the miller and arranged to send them back. The miller took them back. This is what happens to most unsold puppies in pet stores.
Of course, the miller had no use for them. That is where rescue comes in. Many rescues in this area work to develope a relationship with the millers. It is not easy because what they do is a horror to us, but it helps the dogs, so we keep our mouths shut and do what we need to do.
The miller called my friend and told her what happened. She said that if my friend wanted them, she could have them. No money changed hands and as I speak, those puppies are in the vets office being altered and otherwise fixed up. Once they are better, they will be posted for adoption.
I realize that this is not the fate of every unsold puppy, but it really is typical.
So next time a sweet little puppy in the pet store catches your eye, go home and check out breed rescue. Many times, you can find a dog or puppy who was bred under the same conditions that pet store dogs are, but is UTD on shots and vetted. Same quality, better price, vetted and you will not be feeding the cycle of misery.”
The rabbits went to hunting dogs for practise. That’s what happens to cute little bunnies when they get too big to sell anyway.
Cat and dog sales are frowned upon in the UK and pet shops don’t stock them because of the hassle they get from the public.
The rats went to a rat rescue, the chinchilla went to a school with a couple of hamsters for company.
A private buyer bought the budgies at a very reduced price. The owners extended family got a lot of freebies, I rescued the fish and sold them to other pet shops at a fraction of their real worth. They would have been flushed otherwise.
You can’t close the business while it still contains livestock and other pet shops don’t want them because they have their own suppliers who need to shift their stock as it’s a production line. Likewise the original supplier can’t take them back as they have already been replaced.
It’s an unpleasant business for all involved.
They either try and sell them for cheap, or dispose of them. Most places that sell them to the pet stores do not take them back.
They’ll probably try to sell them off cheap to whoever they can, as money is their only concern.
