Is Pro Pet Liquid Wormer Safe And Effective For My Cats?
I’ve just noticed my kitties have roundworms. I went to walmart and found this Pro Pet liquid wormer for roundworms. Has anybody used this on their cats before? Is it safe? Is it effective? I have no problem taking them to the vet Monday morning but I was just curious if anybody has successfully rid their cats of worms with stuff, or did you end up having to take them to the vet office anyway. Basically, is Pro Pet Wormer a waste of time and money? I don’t want to give my cats anything that is harmful. Thanks!
There are quite a few different types of intestinal parasites, and a pet can have one or all of them at once. Your vet is the only one who can determine what kind of parasite your cat has. They check a fecal sample under a microscope to look for worm eggs. Also bring in some of the worms when you go. Each type of worm has it’s own medication to get rid of them. There are combination medications so you are not giving multiple pills.
Anything you buy over the counter is useless. It may not treat for the correct parasite and it is not prescription strength. And as someone said before me, many OTC drugs are medications that aren’t used anymore, for various reasons – safety and efficacy being two.
I WOULD HOLD OFF ON GIVING YOUR KITTENS ANY MEDS. TAKE THEM TO THE VET AND HAVE THEM PRESCRIBE A MED THAT IS FOR THEIR WEIGHT. THEY WILL MAKE SURE THEY GIVE THEM THE CORRECT MED FOR THE TYPE OF WORMS THEY HAVE. BEST OF LUCK AND HOPE YOUR KITTIES GET BETTER SOON!!!

My adult cats got the worms and I tried just about everything and nothing I bought over the counter worked. I spent alot of money and the cats time being sick with worms. Because if one gets them they all do, So my vet told me they needed to come in for the shot its the most effective way to get rid of parasites,that nothing over the counter was going to work.So I got them the shot and in a week I didnt see them anymore. So Id go to the vet before you go through what I did. I hope this helps you Good Luck !!!!!
Usually any dewormer over the counter can be a wast of money and time. Not knowing what types of parasites you could have wasted your money if the medication is not a broad spectrum. For example if your kitty has hookworms and the dewormer only gets roundworms, you’ve wasted your money. Sometimes the ingredients in the over the counter medications are ones that veterinarian have quit using because better and safer ones are on the market. If you can, I would return what you got at WalMart and take a stool sample in to be examined or just have your kitty examined to make sure all is OK with the kitties.

You have been given good answers above – I am in Australia and I don’t know anything about Pro-Pet Liquid Wormer, so I can’t say if it is effective or not. It is most likely safe, provided you follow the instructions properly, but it may not be effective.
It is true that the flea and worm treatments from the supermarket tend to be very poor, sometimes almost useless – at least in Australia. Here, the safe & effective products are sold at the vet and at some pet stores.
If you can take the kittens to the vet on monday, I would advise you NOT to use the stuff you got from Walmart. One reason is, that the vet may want to use a different product, and it can be very unsafe to use two different products at the same time – so if you use what you have now & the vet says it is useless, then you may still be unable to use an effective product until the Pro-Pet is out of their systems.
Take the product you bought with you to the vet, and seek their opinion – this is certainly the safest option for you kittens & will guarantee that the vet can immediately provide you with a safe and effective solution.

EDIT – the answer directly above mine makes an important point – do bring a poop sample with you to the vet (I know it sounds gross). The vet will most likely want to examine and test a poop-sample, and it will save you going to the vet a second time if you don’t have a sample on the first visit.
This is even more icky – but for some tests the poop has to be fresh. If you can’t get a fresh sample before going to the vet, you can instead get a sample now, seal it up really well and refridgerate it.
In all honesty, no treatment from a supermarket is of much use. I strongly advice that you get a good ’spot on’ treatment from the vet which also cures roundworm such as Stronghold.
It is quite expensive but certainly does the job.
A periodic treament of drontal will also ensure your cat is guarded against tape worm.
